To all you shy guys: how can I encourage him without directly asking?

One of my friends has introduced me to a guy in the hopes of setting us up. I've never met him in person, but we've talked on facebook. He seems really nice and is someone I would really like to meet and get to know. The one thing I've already noticed is that he is quite shy and reserved. I don't mind him being shy because I'm shy, too. I really want to get to know him, but I don't want to have to make all the moves. I'm pretty sure he's interested because he asked me about a concert he was planning to go to and invited me to go with him to some parties. None of them worked out with my schedule, and now I'm worried he might think I don't like him or something. What are some things I can do to encourage him to make some moves or show him that I'm interested without scaring him away? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)
