Can i only plug in one midi interface into one port with the other not in?

if i plug in my midi interface's midi out port into my keyboard's midi in port only, leaving the interface's midi in unplugged will it work as normal. I bought and midi interface cable and my keyboard only has midi in port,no in, and when i play a note it holds for 10 second. is wondering if this is the problem or is it my interface
