When replacing an IDE hard drive, should i "upgrade" to a larger SATA drive or upgrade to larger IDE drive.?

What is the difference between the IDE and SATA drive other than their cables and interface. If I upgrade to a SATA drive it would cost more because I would need to buy the adapter for the switch over. Also, does a SATA drive cost more than the IDE drive, or the other way around? Thanks in advance.
